Russian gate

Ruska Brama
Ukraine, Kamianets-Podilskyi
The Russian Gate is a unique for Europe hydraulic fortification of the 15th-16th centuries in the southern part of Kamyanets-Podilskyi, which, together with the Polish Gates, constituted a system for flooding the canyon of the Smotrych River, in case the enemy broke through the defense of the city in this area. The defensive gate complex consisted of eight towers, an external additional tower - a barbican and defensive walls that completely blocked the 90-meter canyon, with locks at the intersection of the riverbed.

As a result of frequent and full-flowing floods, the coastal fortifications of the Russian Gates were destroyed for decades, until half of the towers collapsed by the beginning of the 18th century. By the beginning of the 19th century, having lost their original meaning along with the fortress, the Russian Gates were converted into warehouses. Since 1959, restoration and restoration work has been carried out on the territory of the southern system of fortifications in Kamyanets-Podilskyi, which has preserved the Russian Gate complex in the form of fragments of defensive walls, an underground gallery, five towers out of eight, and the remains of locks.
