The canyon of the Smotrych River in the area of Kamyanets is a unique phenomenon for this region of Ukraine. A deep narrow river valley with steep cliffs of 30-40 meters is a real miracle of nature. Within the city, the length of the canyon reaches 9 kilometers and has an area of .49 hectares. Thanks to the canyon, the loop of Smotrych around the Old Town, the city was inaccessible to enemies (of course, first a loop appeared tens of thousands of years ago, and then on this rock, almost an island, the city appeared).

Many endemic plants listed in the Red Book of Ukraine grow on the slopes of the canyon. Unfortunately, the locals do not really appreciate the miracle with which they live next door - they dump garbage on it. Excursion ATVs and BRDM, which move almost every time along the canyon and the river itself, also damage nature.
The cultural landscape of the Smotrych Canyon within Kamyanets-Podilsky has been considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since September 1989. Unfortunately, improper restoration work in the Old Town and untidy construction of the canyon slopes have reduced the chances of getting on this list to almost zero.

Next to the Novoplanovsky Bridge you can ride over the canyon from one bank to another (see video).
