Church of the Franciscans

Church of the Franciscans
Ukraine, Lviv
The Franciscan Church (built as a Capuchin monastery and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is a religious building in Lviv (Ukraine), an architectural monument. Located on st. Korolenko, 1.

The building was built in 1708 for the monastery of Catholic Capuchins. The monastery was founded in 1707 by Elizaveta Senyavskaya. The land for the construction of the temple and the monastery was donated by Andrey Dombrovsky, a colonel of the Polish troops. After almost two years of efforts to obtain a building permit, on June 12, 1709, a place was consecrated for building a temple and a monastery and a cross was erected. The construction of the monastery began in the spring of 1710 and was completed in 1715. The construction of the monastery was completed. The solemn consecration of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was held on May 21, 1718 by the Lviv Roman Catholic Archbishop Jan Skarbek.

The Capuchin monastery was liquidated as part of the Regulation of parishes and monasteries in 1784, carried out by the new Austrian authorities. On May 5, 1786, the Lviv Capuchins left their monastery. The monastery library was transferred to Lviv University.
In 1785 it passed to the Franciscans. In Soviet times, it was closed for worship, a vocational school with a hostel was located in the monastery premises. There was a warehouse in the temple, and a dining room in the altar part. In the 1990s, it was transferred to the Seventh-day Adventist community.

The church acquired its modern appearance after restoration in 1833. The brick, three-nave, middle nave, which protrudes significantly above the side ones, is united along the facade by a characteristic baroque motif - volutes. The facade is quite modest, its plane is enlivened by pilasters, a portal and reliefs between the windows on the second tier. The facade ends with a strict triangular pediment. The prisenok with pediments was added in 1902.

Adjoining the former Franciscan church is the preserved former monastery building, which also belongs to the religious community of Seventh-day Adventists.
