The church, consecrated in the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, became the first church built outside the Sumy fortress. It had the status of a regimental temple, opposite it was the first city cemetery.

In the 1920s, the church was closed, and the building itself was used for household needs, later the city crematorium was located here.

In 1932 the temple was destroyed by the Bolsheviks. According to the memoirs of old-timers, it was not possible to undermine the church either on the first or on the second attempt. Then a triple amount of explosives was laid. And this time the building did not resist. And in the city, within a radius of several kilometers, there was not a single whole glass left.

In 2008, the foundation of the church was excavated and cleared. After a long debate and due to the lack of documents that would allow a full study of the appearance of the former church, the idea of ​ ​ restoring the church was mothballed.
In place of the altar of the old church, a small chapel was installed, and next to it was a memorial sign stylized as the architecture of the Intercession Church.
