Church of the Intercession

Church of the Intercession of the Holy Mother of God
Ukraine, Sumy
The now defunct Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos was the main temple of the Sumy Sloboda Cossack regiment, then the hussar and dragoon regiments, which were quartered in the city for a long time. Initially, the church, built at the end of the 17th century, was wooden, but over time it fell into disrepair and was rebuilt, again wooden. Only a century later, in 1783, a stone three-domed church in the late Baroque style was laid on this site, completed and consecrated 7 years later. In 1821, a massive four-tier bell tower was built nearby, with porticos on the two lower tiers.
During the Soviet era, the building was used as a crematorium, until in 1932 the temple was blown up, and in its place a square with the Tachanka monument was created. In 2008, with the help of ground penetrating radar, at a depth of 70 cm, the brick foundation of the church was found, which was excavated, the monument to the tachanka was moved. It turned out that the church foundation partially extends onto the roadway of Petropavlovskaya Street, so it was mothballed, and the contours of the former walls were marked on the square with clinker bricks. In the place where the altar was located, a small elegant Holy Intercession Chapel was installed, next to it is a memorial sign-model of the Intercession Church with a place for setting candles and with evening illumination. The long-term plans include the restoration of the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos.

The church, consecrated in the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, became the first church built outside the Sumy fortress. It had the status of a regimental temple, opposite it was the first city cemetery. In the 1920s, the church was closed, and the building itself was used for household needs, later the city crematorium was located here. In 1932 the temple was destroyed by the Bolsheviks. According to the memoirs of old-timers, it was not possible to undermine the church either on the first or on the second attempt.
