The monument to the famous sugar manufacturer and philanthropist Ivan Gerasimovich Kharitonenko is located at the beginning of Petropavlovskaya Street on Pokrovskaya Square in the center of Sumy. Being one of the largest sugar producers in Russia in the 19th century, Ivan Gerasimovich allocated significant funds for the development of the city of Sumy, to help the poor citizens. In particular, thanks to the efforts of Kharitonenko, free medical care was organized for the Sumy poor, an orphanage was built and funds were allocated for its maintenance.

Ivan Kharitonenko died on November 30, 1891 and was buried at the Central City Cemetery of Sumy, located at the end of the same Petropavlovskaya Street. A bronze monument designed by sculptors A. Opekushin and A. Croisy was erected in 1899 in front of the Intercession Church that has not survived. In 1918, the sculpture of Kharitonenko was replaced by a sculpture by V.I. Lenin, in this form the monument existed until 1996, when a copy of the bronze figure of Ivan Kharitonenko, made on donations from Sumy residents, was placed on a pedestal.
The monument is a sculpture of Kharitonenko, mounted on a high plinth resting on a square two-tiered marble pedestal with a three-step staircase. The monument is surrounded on four sides by cast-iron lanterns, interconnected by massive chains.
