Sumy Altanka

Sumy arbour
Ukraine, Sumy
Altanka - a wooden carved arbor - one of the visiting cards of Sumy, is located in the city center on Pokrovskaya Square. An octagonal arbor 10 meters high, on a brick plinth with a domed roof with a diameter of 6 meters, was built without a single nail in 1900-1905 according to the project of architect Matvey Shchavelev. Pagan symbols of the sun and fertility related to the Trypillia culture can be seen in the lacy patterns of the wooden decorations of the gazebo. In March 2010, Altanka became the winner of the Seven Wonders of Sumy contest.
