Trinity Cathedral

Holy Trinity Cathedral
Ukraine, Sumy
The cathedral was built next to the Trinity Church from 1901 to 1914. The laying of the first stone took place in May 1901. In the beginning, to prepare the project, P.I. Kharitonenko turned to the Moscow architect A.V. Shchusev, who, due to being busy, could not deal with the entire design of the cathedral. And the temple was designed and built by the Sumy architect - engineer G.A. Scholz. But the project of the mosaic floor and the church fence was carried out by A.V. Shchusev.
P.I. Kharitonenko spent about half a million rubles on the construction of the Trinity Cathedral. In 1905, work was suspended, as Kharitonenko was on the verge of bankruptcy due to the general economic crisis in Russia. However, the situation soon improved and Kharitonenko was able to continue construction. Dreaming of repeating the miracle of St. Vladimir's Cathedral in Kyiv, Pavel Ivanovich turns to the famous artist - Mikhail Nesterov, whom he was quite familiar with in Moscow, and orders him images for the iconostasis of the cathedral. Six magnificent images - Christ, the Mother of God, the Trinity, Nikola, the archangels Gabriel and Michael - on which the artist worked during 1913-1914, belong to the best that was done by Nesterov in the field of church painting. These six icons disappeared from the Trinity Cathedral in the 1920s.
In the interior of the temple, painting on canvases and in niches under the windows and on sails was performed by the Moscow artist N. Nivinsky. Later, in 1914-1915, the St. Petersburg artist K. Petrov-Vodkin worked on the stained-glass window "Trinity". The majestic marble iconostasis was destroyed during the war, when it was transported by ship from Italy.

Pavel Kharitonenko, the son of Sumy sugar producer Ivan Kharitonenko, who continued to build his father's sugar empire, ordered the construction of the church as his own tomb. The cathedral was founded in 1901 and built for a very long time - even a year after the customer's death (he died in 1914) the temple was not yet completed, and in 1915 construction stopped - there was a war and profits were not too much to spend her on a huge building. The cathedral itself consists of two parts - the upper (actually, the temple itself) and the lower (underground).
