Sakura-Fest in Uzhgorod

Cherry blossom in Uzhgorod
Carpathians, Uzhhorod
Sakura-Fest is an annual Japanese cherry blossom festival held in Uzhgorod in mid-April. In 1923, sakura seedlings were brought to Uzhgorod from Vienna, and now sakura adorns Dovzhenko and Rakoczi streets, as well as Pushkin Square. As part of the festival, sky lanterns are launched, art fairs and exhibitions, concerts and master classes are held. Cherry blossoms last about 2 weeks, at the same time magnolia flowers begin to bloom.

Cherry blossoms are why hundreds and thousands of travelers flock to Uzhgorod for the May holidays. The largest concentration of sakura trees can be seen on Pushkin Square and Rakoczi and Dovzhenko streets (all of them are located in the city center and are adjacent to the embankment). But single cherry trees, as well as magnolias, Japanese quince and ornamental apple trees, can be found throughout the city. According to the legend, which the guides will gladly tell you, sakura was stolen from the Japanese, who spent the night in neighboring Mukachevo.
