The ancient city of Butrint is located on the lake, just 2 km from the Ionian Sea and 15 km from the city of Saranda. The city was founded by the Greeks as a colony of Corfu. Archaeological excavations began in 1928 and continued after World War II. Today, Butrint is an archaeological museum-reserve, on the territory of which you can see the preserved ruins of the ancient Greek theater, sanctuaries and Roman baths.
In 1992, the ancient city of Butrint was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Definitely worth a visit, very well preserved ruins of an ancient city in the vicinity of Saranda.→
