Catacombs of Saint Solomon

Agia Solomoni Catacombs
Cyprus, Paphos
During early Christian times (1st century AD) many catacombs were built in Paphos. These are underground shelters for persecuted Christians. The remains of these caves, dug into the ground, can be found throughout the city. The most famous of them are the catacombs of St. Solomon - these are passages that are hollowed out in the rock mass. They converge together, forming an underground area. The most historically significant cave of the catacombs is dedicated to Saint Solomon and her seven sons Maccabees, holy martyrs.

According to the Old Testament, the Syrian king Antiochus executed the sons for their faith, and Solomonia died over their bodies with a prayer. The bodies of eight Christians were buried in this cave, which, however, was nicknamed "the cave of the seven sleepers" - after the number of sons.

In the 9th-12th centuries, a church was built in the cave, which has not survived to this day. Since that time, only traces of frescoes on its walls have been preserved. There are also many inscriptions on the walls, some of which were left here by the crusaders in the 13th century.
Icons hang in the cave of St. Solomon, and it is well lit. If you enter the catacombs through one of the side passages, you can get into rather gloomy narrow passages. Descending from the cave of St. Solomon to the lower level of the catacombs, you can find an ancient well. Now only a thin trickle of water beats out of it, but it is considered sacred and, according to legend, helps against eye diseases.
