square house

Maison Carrée
France, Nimes
The square house is an ancient Roman temple located in the center of Nîmes. It was built during the time of Augustus and has been well preserved to this day. It was saved from destruction by the fact that in the 4th century it was converted into a church. In 1823, the Square House became a national museum and housed an exposition of ancient Roman art.

From an architectural point of view, the temple is a portico with six columns on the main facade and eleven on the side facades.

One of the oldest buildings in the city is the "Square House" (Maison Carree), which was founded by order of Emperor Augustus. He dedicated the church to his grandchildren. Over the course of its long history, the building has changed its purpose several times and has miraculously survived to this day. In the 4th century, the temple was converted into a church, and during the French Revolution it was used as a stable. In 1823, it was decided to convert the building into a museum dedicated to ancient Roman art.
