The Conciergerie Castle is located on the Ile de la Cité near the Notre Dame Cathedral. The palace was built in the VI century for the king of the Franks Clovis, the first time Paris became the official residence of the king. After the death of Clovis, the castle was empty for a long time. And only at the end of the 10th century, King Hugo Capet placed a council and administration in the palace. Over the course of four centuries, the fortress was rebuilt several times.
In 1358 there was a popular uprising, the king fled, the castle was empty again. Having lost the role of the residence of the king, the palace in Sit turns into the Palace of Justice. The fugitive monarch bequeathed to guard the palace to his concierge, hence the current name of the Conciergerie castle. In 1391 the building became an official prison. It ceased to be the dungeon of the Conciergerie only in 1914, the palace was given the status of a historical monument.
