strait of Gibraltar

Estrecho de Gibraltar, The Strait of Gibraltar
Gibraltar, Gibraltar
The Strait of Gibraltar is called the "Gateway to the Mediterranean" because it connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. Passing between the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula and the northwestern coast of Africa, it also separates two continents - Europe and Africa. The strait has a width of 14 to 44 km, a length of 65 km and a depth of up to 1180 m. On both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar there are steep cliffs, which in ancient times were called the Pillars of Hercules - these are the Rock of Gibraltar in the Pyrenees and Mount Jebel Musa in Morocco.
The Strait of Gibraltar is of great strategic and economic importance for the states and territories located on its shores - after all, there are many seaports and various naval facilities in the strait area (especially the ports of Ceuta and Tangier, as well as the British naval base of Gibraltar).

The myths of other Greece tell that Hercules broke through the strait between Europe and Africa according to his needs, of course, very significant. In the views of the ancients, the Other World began behind it, and Plato reported that the mythical Atlantis was located there. In reality, this is a remnant of the primitive ocean Tethys with a length of about 60 km, an average width of about 20 km and a depth of more than 300 m, in some places, more than a kilometer (data from different sources differ).
