On 16 March 1888, the foundation stone of the new neoclassical building was laid. The building was financed by three Kefalonian brothers living in the diaspora, Panagios, Marinos and Andreas Vallianos, and is known as "Vallianio". It was designed by the Danish architect Baron Theophilus Hansen and supervised by Ernst Ziller. In 1903, the National Library of Greece was moved from the oldest university building to Vallianio, where it was housed continuously until 2017. In 2018, the National Library of Greece moved to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, while the newspaper collection and reading room remained in this building.→
