Archaeological Museum of Chania

Archaeological Museum of Chania
Greece, Chania
The Archaeological Museum of Chania is located in the old part of the city on Halidon Street and belongs to the archaeological sites of Chania.

It is not known for certain when the museum was built, but data about it arose during the great earthquake of 1595. Later, the building was converted into a temple dedicated to the Ottoman-Turkish conqueror of the city, Yusuf Pasha. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became the Ideon Andron cinema hall. After the Second World War, it was used as a warehouse for military equipment, and from 1963 to the present day, as the Archaeological Museum of the city of Chania.

The museum is worth a visit, it is open daily until 15.00, except Monday. Finds from a large area of Chania are combined here in such a way that one can see the development of the history of the western part of Crete. Ceramics, stone sculptures, seals, sculpture, metalwork, jewelry and gold coins are presented in chronological order. Also on display are mosaics from the Roman period (2nd-3rd century AD) depicting scenes from the circle of Dionysus, and episodes from the myth of Poseidon and the nymph Amemonis.
