The new fortress or Neo Frurio is a huge complex of defensive structures erected in the northeastern part of the city. Huge walls dominate the landscape as you walk from Neo Limani towards the city along the road through the fish market.
Until recently, the new fortress was a closed territory due to the naval garrison stationed there. However, now the restrictions have been lifted and the fortress is open to the general public with guided tours through the labyrinths of medieval corridors and defensive structures. The winged lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of Venice, can be found at regular intervals throughout the fortress.
