Elizabeth Bridge

Erzsebet híd, Elisabeth Bridge
Hungary, Budapest
Erzhebet Bridge is one of the four central bridges of the Hungarian capital. It was opened in 1903, blown up by the Nazis in 1945 during the retreat and rebuilt in 1964. The bridge is 290 meters long and 27 meters wide, which is 9 meters wider than its predecessor. It not only serves as an important transport interchange, but is also popular among tourists: it offers excellent views of the city. And in the evening, thanks to the illumination, the bridge is painted in the colors of the national flag.

Construction of the bridge began in 1897. It got its name from Queen Elizabeth of Bavaria, widely known as Sissy. The bridge was opened on October 10.1903. It was a little over three hundred and seventy-eight meters long and eighteen meters wide. The length of the largest span is two hundred and ninety meters. World War II caused irreparable damage to the building - the bridge was blown up in 1945. The construction of the bridge began again only fifteen years later. This is the only bridge in Budapest that has not been restored in its original form.
