Medici Chapel

Medici Chapels
Italy, Florence
The Medici Chapel is the ancestral tomb of the Medici family, which has been worked on for almost 15 years. The chapel is richly decorated with frescoes and sculptures, but the project was never fully brought to life by the great Michelangelo. In 1527, an uprising broke out in the city and the Medici were expelled, the Italian master took the side of the rebels. The chapel is located next to the Basilica of San Lorenzo and is considered one of Michelangelo's grandest works.

I don't even know how to rate. The fact is that the main thing - the interior - I have not seen. It was still closed at 9 am, and when we returned at 4 pm it was already closed. By the way, the entrance fee (2019) is 8 euros.

We got to the Medici Chapel almost before its closing and, being the last visitors, we were able to feel in silence the majesty of the idea and all the powerful energy transferred by Michelangelo to his unique creation. The ashes of almost all the Grand Dukes of the Medici family are buried here. The octagonal Chapel of the Princes, which has become a mausoleum for six members of the family, is breathtaking from the stunning interior design: the walls and floor are made of different types of marble, along the walls are the coats of arms of sixteen cities of the Duchy of Tuscany, inlaid with precious stones, mother-of-pearl, corals.

Family crypt of the Medici family. The chapel of the princes amazes with the splendor of the decoration. It is lined with marble, precious and semi-precious stones, coral, mother-of-pearl. The construction of the New Sacristy was begun by Michelangelo and completed by Ammannati and Vasari. It is decorated with statues by Michelangelo. Try to get into the chapels be sure. Queues (huge as usual) try to come in the morning (in my opinion they only work until lunch, check on the website). Not a single photo conveys the real beauty of the statues.
