Cathedral in Tropea

Duomo di Tropea
Italy, Calabria
The cathedral is one of the attractions of the small resort town of Tropea, located on the picturesque east coast of Calabria. The temple is famous for its marble sarcophagi and the icon of the Romanian Mother of God, the patroness of the city, the work of a student of the famous Italian artist Giotto. The cathedral was built around the 12th century by the Normans. In the 17th century, the architectural appearance of the church building underwent major changes, in particular, it was expanded, and most importantly, it was stylized as baroque. During its centuries-old history, the cathedral has suffered from earthquakes more than once and has undergone numerous restorations.

Built in the Norman style in the twelfth century on the remains of a Byzantine cemetery. As a result of repeated earthquakes it was significantly rebuilt. The last restoration took place in 1927-1931. The entrance portal of the cathedral is decorated with an arch of blocks of volcanic tuff. The same arches are located on the side wall. The main shrine of the cathedral is the icon of St. Mary of Romania. Prominent citizens of the city are buried in the crypts of the cathedral, including the family of the philosopher Galluppi.
