The National Maritime Museum of Sri Lanka is located in Galle, the administrative center of the Southern Province of the country, 119 km from Colombo. The halls of the museum are located in the former warehouse of the fort, built by the Dutch in 1663 on the site of the destroyed Portuguese fortification. The exposition of the Maritime Museum is dedicated to the flora and fauna of the southern coast of Sri Lanka, maritime history and archeology and covers a period of more than 7000 years.

Museum exhibits, ranging from coins and dishes to ship utensils, allow us to trace the cultural influence of various peoples on this region. It also tells about the work of fishermen, presents local equipment for fishing and hunting, products from improvised materials found in the ocean. A separate section is devoted to objects found during the study of sunken ships. For example, during the four-year excavations of the ship Avondster, which sank in 1659 in the Gulf of Galle, 2,000 different artifacts were found that took their rightful place in the museum.
