Royal Botanic Garden

Royal Botanical Gardens, Kandy Botanical Garden, Royal Botanic Gardens
Sri lanka, Kandy
The Royal Botanical Garden is located in the central part of Sri Lanka, in the village of Paradeniya, surrounded on all sides by the Mahaweli River. The botanical garden was founded in 1821 on the territory of the residence of the last ruler of the kingdom of Kandy. The total area of the garden is 63 sq. km., which presents more than 4800 plant species from around the world. Here you can see rare and amazing trees: a double coconut tree, a drunken tree and a huge umbrella tree. But the Royal Garden is famous, first of all, for its collection of orchids and palm trees. There is also a separate area with memorial trees planted by famous people, in particular, King Nicholas II and writer A.P. Chekhov.

A huge area where gigantic trees grow (just like from the movie "Avatar"), monkeys run freely (you can feed them, but not to be seen by the caretakers of the garden), there are palm alleys, for lovers of botany or just compare yourself in height with giant trees will be very entertaining and impressive.

I was extremely disappointed. Drive half a star to see the most ordinary botanical garden, even rather ordinary, a park that we have a lot in Ukraine (even our Alexandria or Sofiyivka are better). I expected to see something like an arboretum, with a lot of interesting exotic plants, but I saw - an ordinary well-groomed park. I don't understand why there are so many rave reviews? Perhaps, against the background of the rest of Sri Lanka, with its noise, dirt, and other chaos, it compares favorably, because it is a rare well-groomed place there.

Very nice garden, large area. You can spend the whole day there, though because of the climate it’s hard to walk even for several hours, especially during the day.
