The Krakow Academy - the oldest higher art educational institution in Poland - dates back to October 1818, from the School of Drawing and Painting at the Faculty of Literature of the Jagiellonian University. Since 1833, for 40 years, the School functioned at the local technical institute, having received an independent status in 1873. Jan Matejko, an outstanding Polish artist, a native of Krakow, became its first director. The list of special disciplines was expanded, Matejko attracted famous artists to teach, and the construction of the building of the future academy began under him. In 1900, the school became the Academy of Fine Arts, in 1950 it was merged with the University of Arts, in 1979 the educational institution was named after Jan Matejko.

At various times, such famous people as the outstanding film director Andrzej Vajda, the famous Ukrainian impressionist painters Oleksandr Murashko, Mykhailo Boychuk and Mykola Burachek studied at the academy. Currently, more than 1,000 students from around the world are studying at 7 faculties and 3 interfaculty departments of the academy.

The Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts is a higher educational institution in Krakó w, founded in 1818. Formerly known as the School of Drawing and Painting and the School of Fine Arts. Ukrainian artists Mykhailo Boychuk, Mykhailo Zhuk, Mykola Kasperovych, Ivan Trush, and the Polish sculptor Tomasz Dykas studied at the Krakow School of Fine Arts. Since 1956, the academy has been named after its first director, the Polish artist Jan Matejko.→
