Monument to Jan Matejko

Monument to Jan Mateyko
Poland, Krakow
The monument to Jan Matejko (1838 - 1893) in Krakow was opened in 2013, on the 175th anniversary of the birth of an outstanding Polish artist and patriot, a local native. The monument is installed in the park of the Old City, opposite the Academy of Arts, whose professor is the author of the monument, Jan Tutai. The artist is depicted in a thoughtful pose, cross-legged, sitting in an armchair located in the lower left corner of an empty picture frame. The frame is installed on a small, modest granite pedestal with Matejko's name and years of life engraved on it.
Although some of Matejko's paintings contain a number of historical inaccuracies, they depict historical events important for Poland, show national heroes, and contribute to the awakening of the national spirit. The artist created huge canvases, for example, the Battle of Grunwald, 426 × 987 cm in size. Matejko headed the School of Fine Arts in Krakow, was an honorary member of the Academies of Arts in Paris and Berlin, Vienna and Prague.
