Jan Matejko (1838-1893) was an outstanding Polish artist, author of battle and historical paintings, primarily of patriotic content. The artist's whole life was connected with Krakow. The author of the monument is Jan Tutai, a professor at the Krakow Academy of Arts. The decision to erect the monument was made by the city council in 2008, but was postponed for five years due to problems with project funding. The monument was unveiled on November 12.2013 in a solemn atmosphere during the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the birth and 120th anniversary of the death of Jan Matejko.→
