florian gate

Brama sw. Floriana, Saint Florian's Gate
Poland, Krakow
The Florian's Gate is the only remaining of the eight gates of the fortress wall that previously surrounded Krakow. The gate was built in 1307 and named after St. Florian, the patron saint of the city. The Florian Street that leads from the gate to the Market Square is also named after him. A wall adjoins the tower of the Florian Gate, which tourists can climb by stairs.

The Florian Gate in Krakow is a medieval gate located in the Old Town of Krakow at the end of Florianska Street. It is one of the eight defensive gates of Krakow. The solemn, monumental Florian's Gate is the only surviving gate in the defensive wall that once surrounded Krakow. Having lost its defensive significance in the 19th century, the gates were miraculously saved from the demolition of the fortifications and today delight visitors to the city, who came to the mighty walls of this legendary monument of Krakow.
