The Field Cathedral of the Polish Army

Church of Our Lady Queen of the Polish Crown
Poland, Warsaw
The Field Cathedral of the Polish Army (officially the Cathedral of Our Lady Queen of Poland) is the main garrison church of the Polish Army, located in Warsaw at Długa Street (Długa 13/15). Built in the 17th century, the building has survived destruction and reconstruction, and today houses memorials to fallen soldiers.
The first wooden church on this site was erected in 1642 by order of King Władysław IV for the Piarist Order.
The current Baroque building was constructed between 1660 and 1701 according to the designs of architect Józef Fontana. After the suppression of the November Uprising, Russian authorities transferred the building to the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, rebuilding it in the classical style.
In 1919, after Poland regained its independence, the building was returned to the Catholic Church and restored to its original appearance. The church was almost completely destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, and then meticulously restored between 1946 and 1960.

The first church to stand on the site of the current Field Cathedral of the Polish Army was a wooden church of the Piarist Fathers, dating from the mid-17th century. Unfortunately, it burned down during a battle with the Swedes in 1651. A new church was built and consecrated in 1701. Between 1834 and 1919, it was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. Thanks to the new owners, the building received, among other things, three additional towers. After 1919, the church returned to Catholic ownership and began to serve as the Cathedral of the Polish Army.
