Mtoni Palace is the oldest palace in Zanzibar. It was built for Sultan Sayid Said. The name Mtoni in translation means "a place by the river". From the descriptions in the book of the Sultan's daughter Salme, we know that the palace had a large courtyard, a bathhouse, a mosque and a separate part in which the Sultan lived with his wife Azza. The palace had a high round observation tower, from the top of which the Sultan watched his fleet.
By the end of the 19th century, the palace was abandoned, and during the First World War it was completely dismantled in order to build an ammunition depot from the palace's components.
Only part of the walls and roof of the palace have survived to this day.

Mtoni Palace is a very colorful place. It is considered one of the oldest in Zanzibar. Now he is going through hard times, but this does not make him less interesting. Some parts of the palace have survived to our time. One fact made a huge impression on me! Now within the walls of the palace, on Tuesdays and Fridays, thematic performances are held (for example, theatrical production of a wedding ceremony) with music, songs, dances and other paraphernalia, they also sell national goodies. All this was done in order to raise funds for the reconstruction of the palace.
