Beit al-Sahel Palace Museum

Beit al-Sahel Palace Museum

Beit al-Sahel Palace was built in the late 19th century and was originally called the Sultan's Palace. This is the latest Sultan's palace in Zanzibar. It is a wide white building with a battlement along the harbour, surrounded by a beautiful garden. In 1994 the palace was turned into a museum. The exposition of the museum presents objects from the life of many sultans. Among them are banquet tables, portraits, thrones, bedrooms, books, and many other things. One of the rooms is dedicated to Princess Salma, the youngest daughter of Sultan Seyid. As you know, Salme became famous thanks to her manuscript, the only written account of the life of the Arab women of the royal court of those times.

A visit to the palace is very educational. Here are exhibits from the life of the sultans. These are their things, interior items, papers, portraits and much more. The exposition provides an opportunity to learn more about the history of Zanzibar and its rulers. It is very interesting to visit the museum accompanied by a guide. I note that the guides in the museum are very qualified. They clearly answer questions, know a lot, talk a lot about the life and families of the sultans. I recommend to visit.
