The English Fort is located in the very center of the city, next to the House of Wonders. The fort was built at the end of the 18th century, at a time when Tanzania was still a British colony. In the 19th century, the fort building was used as a prison and a place for the torture of prisoners. In the 20th century, there was a major railway station here.
Over the years, the English Fort has radically changed its purpose. Nowadays, in the open air, luxurious holidays, festivals and shows are held in the fortress. It is here that they traditionally hold an event that attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world - the International Zanzibar Film Festival.

Story

I wanted to hear an interesting historical story from the guide. But our guide Omar (a local resident) spoke Russian very poorly, and therefore we heard dry numbers, saw shabby walls and an ordinary market stall inside the fort.→

Peaceful life of the old fort

The ancient walls of the fort remind of the colonial history of the city, its significance and amaze with its power. Now everything is peaceful here and the fortress has turned into just a walking place with souvenir shops where you can buy souvenirs for every taste. don't forget to bargain.
