House of Wonders Beit el-Ajaib

Beit el-Ajaib, House of Wonders
Tanzania, Zanzibar_city
The House of Wonders is one of the most important attractions in Zanzibar, in the Stone House. The House of Miracles is located in the very center of the city, it can be seen from afar. The tower of the building rises high above other buildings. The palace itself is made in the Victorian style. The building was built by order of Sultan Bargash ibn Said in 1883 and served as the residence of the Sultan.
The palace got its name Beit el-Ajaib (House of Miracles) because at that time it was a real miracle for local residents, because it was in it that electricity appeared for the first time in Zanzibar, water supply and an elevator were installed.
During the shortest war in Zanzibar, which lasted 45 minutes, the palace was hit by British artillery fire. After some time, the House of Miracles was restored and served as the residence of the Sultan, and after 1913 the government of Zanzibar was located here.
Now the building houses a museum of history and culture. Here you can learn about local traditions, history, crafts and trades, about how the Zanzibaris build their wooden dhows for fishing.
From the upper floors of the building, a beautiful panorama of Stone Town, its blooming gardens and bays opens up.

The House of Wonders is probably the largest building in Zanzibar. It was named the House of Wonders because at the time of its construction, electricity, plumbing, and especially the elevator (probably now the only one in the whole of Zanzibar) were an unprecedented miracle. Now in the building of the palace there is a museum where you can get acquainted with the history of Zanzibar. In front of the entrance to the museum, a sign reads "someday a museum of the history of Zanzibar and the Swahili civilization will be arranged in this house.
