Armenian church

Virmenskaya church
Ukraine, Chernivtsi
The Armenian Catholic Church of the Apostles Peter and Paul in Chernivtsi was built in 1875. Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife donated money for its construction. The architecture of the church, designed by the famous architect Joseph Hlavka, successfully combines elements of the Romanesque, Byzantine and Gothic styles. The temple with two high towers has the shape of a Latin cross in plan. An organ was installed in the temple with excellent acoustics. In 1946, the Soviet authorities closed the church and turned it into a warehouse.

In 1986, the building of the Armenian Church was transferred to the Chernivtsi Philharmonic for an organ hall. After the reconstruction of the church, an organ of the Czech company "Rieger-Kloss" was installed here. Regular services have resumed, weddings and baptisms are being held. Near the temple there is a sculpture "Angel of Mercy".

In the middle of the XIX century among Chernivtsi Armenians there was a need to have their own church. For its construction in 1864 a committee was created, which included the most authoritative members of the Armenian community. Among them were famous people in Chernivtsi, namely a member of the public council of the city, and later the first mayor of Chernivtsi Yakub Petrovich, Ludwig Mikuli - brother of the famous musician Karol Mikuli and others. The Czech architect Josef Hlavka was invited to design the church, at which time he supervised the construction of the future Metropolitan's residence.

Until 1940, the Armenian church performed its main function - it served as the center of spiritual life for local Armenians. There was also a children's parochial school. However, in 1940 the Armenian Catholic community of Chernivtsi disintegrated. Today, the Armenian Church is a subtle combination of the Gothic style with Armenian architectural motifs. According to the plan, the church resembles a Latin cross, and the faç ade of the building is crowned with bell towers. The regional philharmonic society received the building of the Armenian church in charge because of the excellent acoustics of the church hall.
