Cathedral of the Holy Spirit

Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit Cathedral
Ukraine, Chernivtsi
The Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Chernivtsi was built on the initiative of the first Bukovinian Metropolitan E. Gakman, modeled on St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, with a dome 46 meters high. The construction of the neo-Renaissance temple was carried out from 1844 to 1864, and in 1860 the facade of the building was rebuilt. In 1961, the cathedral was closed, its valuables were transferred to various museums, the wall paintings of the lower part were damaged, and the 19th-century murals of the upper part of the walls by Karl Jobson were miraculously preserved. At first, a warehouse was arranged in the cathedral, then an exhibition hall of an art museum.

In 1989, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit was returned to the local Orthodox community, and its restoration was carried out. Vladyka E. Gakman is buried in the cathedral, a monument has been erected to him. The main shrines of the temple are the relics of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara, a portable oak cross with particles of the Life-Giving Tree and the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, brought from Cyprus.

The cathedral was built during 1844-1864 at the request of Bishop Eugene Hackman. The first stone for the construction of the cathedral was laid on June 15.1844 with the blessing of the then Bishop Eugene Hackman. The church is characterized by a combination of oriental Orthodox and Western Roman Catholic architectural motifs. In the late spring of 1862, bells cast in Kalush, weighing more than 51 quintals, were delivered and installed. The cathedral was consecrated by Bishop Eugene Hackman on June 17.

The most important Orthodox church of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate. In the temple, called the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, on the kliros one can hear the beautiful singing of the church choir. Various sacred relics from all over the world are exhibited here for worship. Entering the temple, you immediately feel the spiritual greatness and strength that are so characteristic of prayer places. Metropolitan Nikolai Gakman was previously buried in this church, but during the years of Soviet atheism, his body was secretly reburied, and where is still unknown .
