At the end of the 18th century, the territory of Theater Square in Chernivtsi was the outskirts of the city, at the beginning of the 19th century there was a large fish market, in the last years of the 19th century the square was named after the Austrian Empress Elizabeth. In 1905, an opera house was opened here, designed by the famous Viennese company of Felner and Helmer, which built 43 theaters throughout Europe, among which is the famous Odessa Opera House. The Chernivtsi theater was named after the Bukovinian writer Olga Kobylyanskaya, whose bronze monument was erected in front of the theater entrance.
The architectural ensemble of the square consists of a square, along the perimeter of which there are historical buildings. To the right of the theater is the former building. Jewish People's House (1908), nearby - the former. Romanian People's House (1940), on the contrary - the building of the Medical Academy (1909), the cinema "Chernivtsi" - a former synagogue. In 2000, the Alley of Stars with the names of more than forty famous cultural figures of Bukovina was opened on the square. On the day of the city, a traditional flower exhibition is held on Theater Square.

The most beautiful building of this square and Chernivtsi is the Chernivtsi theater named after Olga Kobylyanska. The Chernivtsi Theater is a dream of velvet and gold, designed by Viennese architects Helmer and Felmera. And yet they were invited to work in Chernivtsi only after the theaters in Vienna and Odessa were built according to their projects. The famous Olga Kobylyanskaya sang in the theater. To the right of the theater is the building of the former Jewish People's House, built in 1908 in the pseudo-Baroque style by the Lviv architect Tadeusz Lewandowski.→
