Saint Sophie Cathedral

Sveta Sofia
Bulgaria, Sofia
Hagia Sophia is located in the center of the Bulgarian capital next to the Alexander Nevsky Church. The first church on this site was built in the 4th century. In the Middle Ages, the church was metropolitan and had great power. It was she who gave the city its name. After the conquest of Bulgaria by the Ottomans, the Cathedral was converted into a mosque, and after the liberation in 1878 it was converted into a warehouse. In the twentieth century, the building was restored and now its appearance is close to the period of the early Middle Ages.

This temple is very ancient (6th century) and gave its name to the modern Bulgarian capital. In Roman times, the city was called Serdika, then Sredets, and from the 14th century. turned into Sophia. During Turkish rule, minarets were added to the church and it acted as a mosque. It has a rich history in general, it has experienced many destructions and reconstructions. Inside the church without decoration, icons are located right on the brick walls. And although it does not differ in rich decoration, some special atmosphere reigns there.
