Shumen fortress

Shumen Fortress, Shumen Fortress
Bulgaria, Varna
The ruins of the fortress are located on the southwestern outskirts of the city of Shumen, 3 km from the city center. The fortress with powerful walls and towers was built by the Romans on a hill on the site of a settlement from the 4th century BC. The Byzantines, who succeeded the Romans, rebuilt and expanded the fortifications.
During the era of the First (VII-XI centuries) and Second Bulgarian Kingdoms (XII-XIV centuries), the Shumen fortress was a barrier to the ancient Bulgarian capitals Preslav and Pliska, a center of crafts and trade. In 1388 the city and the fortress were partially destroyed by the Turkish invaders, and in 1444 the fortress was finally destroyed by the crusaders acting as part of the Polish-Lithuanian troops.
Today, the Shumen Fortress is an open-air museum center: one of the towers has been restored, sightseeing paths have been equipped, information signs have been installed describing previously existing buildings, including two dozen churches, and a museum is operating. Every October, demonstrative knightly tournaments are held on the territory of the fortress.

The ruins of the fortress are located on the outskirts of the city of Shumen. You need to go to the end of Simeon the Great Boulevard (so that the mosque remains on the right), and then follow the signs. Entrance tickets: 1.5 euros - adult, 0.5 euros - children. From the fortress, unfortunately, only the foundation remained. One tower has been restored, from the top of which a wonderful view of Shumen and its surroundings opens. There are special paths for visitors on the territory. There are signs describing which buildings were located in a particular place many centuries ago (for example, a church).
