Pliska National Historical and Archaeological Reserve

National historical-archaeological reserve Pliska
Bulgaria, Varna
Historical and archaeological reserve "Pliska" is located about 2.5 km north of the center of modern Pliska. The reserve with an area of 2300 hectares is located on the site of an ancient city founded by Khan Asparuh, the first Bulgarian ruler. From its foundation in 681 to 893, Pliska was the capital of the Bulgarian state. Palaces, pagan temples and household buildings were erected here, and after the adoption of Christianity, many Orthodox churches appeared on the territory of the capital. 1.3 km northeast of the former khan's residence, the Golyamata Basilica Cathedral (Great Basilica) with marble columns and magnificent mosaics has been partially preserved.
After the destruction of Pliska during military operations at the end of the 10th century, the first serious excavations were carried out in 1899 and continue, intermittently, to the present day. In May 1940, the National Historical and Archaeological Reserve was created on the territory of ancient Pliska, the exhibits of which tell about the life of people more than 1300 years ago.

Awesome place! Here they founded Bulgaria, and baptized it and taught people to read and write - they wrote Cyrillic here. Beautiful place, quiet, calm. You come to the museum and you can walk around the ancient ruins as much as you like - here you have the stones of the khan's palaces, and the ancient square, and secret passages. A kilometer from the museum is Golyama Basilica, where the baptism of the Bulgarians took place in 865. Everything was destroyed by the Byzantines and time, but now everything is being restored and the church has already been rebuilt by a third.
