Monastery of Montserrat

Monasterio de Montserrat, Santa Maria de Montserrat, Montserrat
Spain, Barcelona
Montserrat Monastery is a Benedictine monastery, a spiritual symbol and religious center of Catalonia and a center of pilgrimage for Catholics from all over the world.
The monastery, located at an altitude of 721 m above sea level, got its name from the mountainous area of Montserrat (“Cut Mountains”), 50 km northwest of Barcelona, where thousands of bizarre limestone rocks rise in a small space of 10 x 5 km. Human fantasy has given individual rocks equally entertaining names: Mummy, Bishop's Belly, Elephant's Trunk, Bernard's Horse. In 1987, the natural complex adjacent to the monastery was declared a national park of Catalonia. The rich flora of this corner of nature covers more than one and a half thousand species. Decorated with sculptural works and majolica, the well-groomed mountain paths of this open-air museum, entangling the surroundings of the monastery, are equipped with indicators for the duration and level of difficulty of the route and are popular with both tourists and local residents. The monastery has a developed tourist infrastructure. There is a cable car to the Montserrat monastery. Since 2003, the rack railway "Cremallera de Montserrat" has been operating.

Loved the place! Beautiful panoramas and of course the Virgin Mary. We stood in line for an hour and I'm sure it was worth it. In shops and cafes, of course, prices are very expensive, but what did you want from such a high and touristy place? Would love to come back!

Fantastic views of the Montserrat mountain range near Barcelona simply left us no choice. Of course, when traveling in Spain, we could not miss such a beautiful and unusual place, so we devoted one day of our stay to a trip here. Getting from Barcelona is quite easy and fast. We lived just near the Plaza de Españ a, so we took the train from there towards the city of Manresa. We bought a ticket only to the Monistrol stop, as we planned to climb the mountain on foot. But you can use the Cremallera funicular or the Aeri cable car to go up and buy a ticket immediately including the ascent to the mountain.

A lot has already been written about the extraordinary beauty of this place, so I will focus on the technical details, the knowledge of which will help you fully enjoy this beauty and grandeur. To fully explore the entire complex, you need to set aside a whole day for the trip. If you go with a tour, then according to my observations, different companies offer approximately the same content and cost of excursions. When choosing, it is very important to pay attention to details. For example, for the same price, one company will simply take you to the monastery by bus, and the other will take you to the foot of the mountain, from where you will take the train to the monastery along a road laid among the most picturesque countryside.

I will say right away: we were for the next trip to Montserrat twice. The presence of the car contributed to this. Parking a car for the whole day on the territory of 6.5 euros. You can pay at the machine (you get a ticket at the entrance, the first half hour is free) or at the exit in the Manual row. I advise you right away - come early, since the number of tourist buses and cars is simply colossal, if you arrive earlier, you will park closer to the entrance to the territory of the monastery. ) The first part of our visit was devoted to the monastery itself - a beautiful building, which (to be honest) is basically a remake, since the monastery was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt again.

If you want to be alone with nature and at the same time appreciate the full power of man, then Montserrat is what you need! A place where you forget about all worldly worries. A little crowded, but you can always find a corner where you can be alone with yourself and your thoughts.

The history of the monastery of Montserrat (Monasterio de Montserrat) began in the Middle Ages. Officially, the date of its foundation is considered to be 1025, and the founder is Abbot Oliva. The skete of the Virgin Mary, which became the basis of the new monastery, became the most important of all the religious centers on Mount Montserrat due to the miraculous image of the Black Virgin of Montserrat kept in it, according to legend, discovered in a mountain cave as early as 880. As legend has it, shepherd boys observed a bright light in the mountains, accompanied by a divine melody.
