Historic center of Rethymnon

Rethymnon Old Town
Greece, Rethymno
The historic center of Rethymno dates back to the 13th century, and its architecture is influenced by the Venetian era and the Ottoman period. The old part of the city is full of narrow old streets, and in its very center is the famous Rimondi Fountain. There are several interesting museums in the Old Town, the most famous of which is the Archaeological Museum, located in the “Venetian loggia”, where representatives of the local Italian and Byzantine aristocracy once gathered. A large number of religious monuments are also concentrated in the historical center: the Venetian monastery of St. Barbara, the Church of the Lady of the Angels and the mosque of Ibrahim Khan.

My family and I left early in the morning from the small town of Georgiopolis, where our hotel was located. We decided not to take a car and go by public transport, which is quite comfortable and roomy and went regularly (cost 5 euros per person). Of the attractions - the massive remains of the walls of the Venetian fortress on the mountain. There is a very cozy old town with narrow streets and small cafes and restaurants where you can hide from the scorching heat - we ate delicious ice cream there.
