Monastery of Preveli

Preveli Monastery
Greece, Rethymno
Preveli is a stauropegial Orthodox monastery, which is located on the southern coast of Crete, 37 km from Rethymnon. It is located on several levels: the lower part, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, is closed and turned into a tourist attraction; the upper part, dedicated to John the Evangelist, remains an active monastery.

The monastery was founded in the 16th century, when Crete was part of the Venetian Republic. The exact date of construction is unknown. There is a small museum at the monastery, where items of church utensils are exhibited.

This is the largest monastery in Crete. It has as many as four monks and 6 more inhabitants. When his past was glorious, and the walls were seething with prayers and passions. The guide will talk about the next heroic suffering of the Greeks from the Turks, but you just walk along its courtyard and walls, look into the current church and pray for the souls of those who fell here centuries ago.
