Church of St. Matthias

Matthias Church is located in the Castle District near the Fisher's Bastion. It was built in the 14th century in the late Gothic style, but after the capture of the city by the Turks, it was converted into a mosque. The church acquired its original appearance after reconstruction at the end of the 19th century. It is famous for its colored stained-glass windows, wall paintings, white-stone bell tower and underground crypt.

Bright and majestic temple
Matthias Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in Budapest, built between 1250 and 1270 under the patronage of King Bela IV. After World War II, the building was declared dangerous and scheduled for demolition. However, the church was not demolished. Even today, no one knows who saved the Church of St. Matthew. During the 2000s, the church was completely renovated and refurbished. Restored stone facade, stained glass and decorative wall paintings, 150.000 glazed Zholnai tiles were placed on the roof, the organ was restored, new electrical and computer networks were laid in the building and server rooms were created.→

Beautiful. Gothic. Photogenic.
The church is located on the Buda Hill, surrounded by the Fisherman's Bastion. The building is light and graceful, with multi-colored tiles on the roof, colored stained-glass windows and mosaics inside. Apart from the entrance ticket, you can also buy a tower ticket to admire Buda and Pest. Tours are conducted inside during the day, in the evening the whole complex is beautifully illuminated. We saw a guide in the robe of a monk, a very colorful uncle : )→
