Monument to Saint Stephen

Monument to Saint Stephen I
Hungary, Budapest
The equestrian monument to St. Stephen, the first founding king of the Hungarian state and the national hero of the country, is located next to the Fisherman's Bastion. The monument, after 10 years of painstaking work, was made by the sculptor Alaios Strobl in 1906, for the 1000th anniversary of Hungary. Stephen (Stefan) I was crowned on August 20, 1000 and successfully ruled until 1038, he ruled fairly and wisely, laying the foundations of an independent Christian Hungarian state of the European model. This is reminiscent of a cross in the hands of a horseman, bas-reliefs with scenes from the life of St. Stephen are carved on the pedestal, and figures of four lions are located on the sides of the monument. On one of the bas-reliefs, the image of a sculptor showing the king a model of the temple is recognizable.

For the spread of Christian teaching in the local lands, Stephen I after his death was canonized by the Catholic Church in the person of Pope George and recognized as the patron saint of Hungary. August 20 - St. Stephen's Day - since 1991 is the main public holiday of the country.

A monument to Stephen I - the founder of the Hungarian state - was erected in 1906. The sculptor Alajos Strobl worked on the creation of the monument for ten years, while carefully studying the smallest historical details. The rider on the horse symbolically holds the cross. On the pedestal are bas-reliefs with scenes from the life of St. Stephen. The monument is guarded on all sides by four lions. After the spread of Christian doctrine in the Hungarian lands, Stephen I was canonized after his death by the Catholic Church and recognized as the patron saint of Hungary.

St. Stephen the First - the main Magyar national hero, the king of Hungary. The equestrian monument to St. Stephen is located next to the Matthias Cathedral and the Fisherman's Bastion. On the monument, Saint Stephen is depicted on a war horse with a symbolic cross in his hand - he was an outstanding person, one of his achievements was the introduction of Christianity in these lands, later he was canonized. And even Hungarians celebrate Independence Day on the birthday of a saint. The square around the monument is always crowded, and no wonder - everyone wants to take a picture with the first king of Hungary!.
