Fountain of Neptune

Fontana del Nettuno, Fountain of Neptune
Italy, Florence
The Fountain of Neptune was created in 1570 by the famous Italian sculptor Bartolomeo Ammanati as a marriage gift to Francesco I de' Medici. The sculptural ensemble is installed on Piazza della Signoria near the Vecchio Palace. The fountain is decorated with the chained figures of Skilla and Charybdis, and in the center stands the figure of Neptune, the god of the seas. Cosimo I Medici is clearly discerned in the features of Neptune's face, thus the sculptor wanted to emphasize the dominion of the Florentines over the sea.
