Aqua Paola Fountain

Fontana dell'Acqua Paola, Acqua Paola, Aqua Traiana
Italy, Rome
The Aqua Paola Fountain was built in 1612 on the site of the former aqueduct of Trajan. The fountain is located on Janiculum Hill next to the Church of San Pietro in Montorio. It got its name Aqua Paola in honor of the then Pope Paul V. The fountain was designed by Giovanni Fontana, the author of Aqua Felice, and Flaminio Ponzio. At first, Aqua Paola consisted only of massive gates with five arches to receive water, but later, in 1690, Carlo Fontana added a semicircular pool for water. The shape of Aqua Paola served as a template for the Trevi Fountain.

The fountain is interesting because water enters it from Lake Bracciano through Trajan's Aqueduct built back in 109. The design of the fountain is made according to the type of triumphal arches of the Roman Forum. For its huge size, the Romans call it Fontanone (fountain). From the fountain, a beautiful view of Trastevere opens.
