Tower of Stefan Batory

Furrier Tower, Bashta Stefan Batory, Kushnirska
Ukraine, Kamianets-Podilskyi
The Stefan Batory Tower is an outstanding monument of urban planning and defense architecture of the 16th century. A horseshoe-shaped tower of five tiers was built in 1564-85 at the expense of the Polish king and Grand Duke of Lithuania Stefan Batory and is part of the Polish Gates complex — one of the three entrances to the Old City. In the 17th century, the tower was repaired by a furrier's craft workshop, after which it was also called the Furrier.

During the reconstruction in 1785, under the leadership of Kamyanets-Podilsky Fortress commandant Jan de Witte, the tower was raised to seven tiers, two rectangular side buildings were attached to it. After the Kamyanets-Podilsky Fortress lost its military significance, the tower was used as a warehouse for a long time. Its architecture has preserved elements of decor - a cornice, window and door frames made of white stone. The Wind Gates, the former northern entrance to the city, adjoin the tower of Stefan Batory.
