Gjirokaster is a city-museum listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is in this city, at an altitude of 355 meters above sea level, that the castle of the same name is located. Gjirokastra Castle is one of the largest castles on the Balkan Peninsula. It was built back in the 12th century to protect the river valley below. At different times the city was under the rule of Greece, the Ottoman Empire and independent Albania. During the reign of the Ottoman Empire, by order of Sultan Bayezid II, the castle was expanded and fortified, turning into a strategically important defensive fortress. The western walls of the structure were built by Ali Pasha Tepelensky in 1812. In the nineteenth century on the territory of the fortress there were huge barracks, armory, food storage and a clock tower. From 1932 to 1968, King Zog of Albania used the castle as a prison for political prisoners.
Today, Gjirokaster Castle is open to visitors. Here is the Museum of Weapons. Once every 4 years, the National Folklore Festival is held on the territory of the castle.

The fortress is a must-see in Albania. It offers a magnificent panorama of the city and its surroundings. The fortress is very well preserved. Inside the weapons museum. The husband was happy as a child. An American aircraft is displayed in an open area. Attaching photo. There are guns and a tank. I think it will be interesting to visit teenage boys. But, there is one "but" it is hard to climb to the fortress. It is located quite high, and the road is not very good. Recommend
