After 25 days, the bill came from the hotel.
We rested for two days at the Austria Classic Hotel Wien, which is located on Pratorstrasse. They handed over the numbers, made the calculation as expected and left. After 20 days, we received a letter from the hotel with photographs that we allegedly ruined the sofa with an iron and enclose an invoice of 1480 euros. Is it worth paying this bill if it's not our fault and we didn't even have an iron? What are the consequences if we don't pay?

I don't think the bill was worth paying even if it was your fault
"check the money without leaving the cash register" as they say
besides, there is a high probability that this is a banal scam - someone received information that you were resting and is trying to squeeze out money if an account is indicated - it is likely that he has nothing to do with the hotel

Certainly. They check everything very carefully when you check out. I even heard about how some comrades took the bathrobes from the room, so they were caught at the airport. Therefore, at the time of eviction, everything was fine, since there were no complaints. I agree with the previous review - a divorce is possible.

The case is certainly interesting! You'd be better off talking to a lawyer about this. The consequences can be "not fun", look on the Internet for what could be for an "unpaid hotel bill", because your case will qualify that way. And do not forget that in Europe there is a single computer network for all "debtors, offenders, etc." I would still contact a lawyer.
And how is it "... they check everything very carefully during check-out? ...." Usually you pick up your things, go to the reception, give the key card and that's it. No one in your room controls you.

hessen you are right. You need to contact a lawyer directly. a delicate question. to check the rooms - sometimes after they hand over the key to the reception, they send the cleaner immediately and check the rooms. there were cases in the same Egypt when people did not have time to board the bus, and they were dropped off and the bags were checked (there were thefts of towels and GLASSES !!!)

It all depends on the conditions under which you booked and rented a hotel room. What did you sign, etc. When and in what form the claim was received, how the damage was recorded and what evidence that it was caused by you. Etc. etc. In any case, claiming such damages through the courts seems problematic to me.

it definitely wouldn't qualify as an "unpaid hotel bill". This is damage. If you ignore such a letter, the hotel will either no longer accept you or file a complaint with the police. The police will have to investigate and if there are enough grounds for accusations, then they will be presented to you and subpoenaed. And only on the basis of the court, any sanctions can be imposed on you and placed in the database of violators, where you will stay until the debt and fine are paid off.
In fact, this phenomenon is extremely rare.
I myself was in the "base". This base, by the way, is not uniform in Europe. So even you will not be able to visit Austria (if you are guilty) only by plane. And by car, no problem.
And yet ... you paid for the hotel as if it were a good one, which means that the price included insurance against possible damage. If the hotel is not insured, then this is its problem - let it toil through the authorities.
My advice is forget it.
Threat idea with "divorce" seems to me like the truth.

I agree that it looks like a divorce, but the photo is really our number or similar. The hotel was not booked, but we drove straight to Vienna and accidentally found it. The letter arrived on the hotel's letterhead. The evidence is such that before you it was not, but after you appeared. But we checked out on 13, and they found out on 14-15. Then all their papers are dated. They attached an invoice from some factory, allegedly where the sofa costs 1700 euros, and taking into account the discount for that, 1480)))). I think I can correspond with them by e-mail?

If you received a claim in such a way that there is no trace anywhere that you received it (you didn’t sign for receipt anywhere), then you can simply forget about all this. If the fact that you received this letter can be confirmed, you can send a reply. In an exceptionally correct and mild form, write that you received a letter, the content of which was extremely surprised. Obviously there was some kind of misunderstanding, since the situation described in it cannot have anything to do with you. You really lived in this hotel for a certain period. They fully complied with the established rules, had no complaints from the staff, fully and timely paid for the accommodation. You have no idea about the events that took place or could take place after your check-out from the hotel. Send the letter in such a way that you definitely have a trace of its receipt by the addressee.
