what attractions can you visit on your own from Hersonissos and how?
Good afternoon!!! I decided with my husband to go to Crete (Hersonissos) in May. Tell me what you can visit, see on your own? And how to get there? roughly how much does it cost? Thank you very much in advance.

Good afternoon. On your own, you can visit, in principle, everything. Either rent transport, or take the local public. At any bus station there are a bunch of free booklets and timetables to help you get your bearings. From Heraklion you can go anywhere on the island. We independently visited Matala, Santorini (tickets for a "cat" round-trip cost about 100 euros per person, if my memory serves me), Agios Nikolaus, and nearby attractions: the Cretan Aquarium (so-so, for show you can), Heraklion with its archaeological museum, Knossos. The beaches in Hersonissos are not special, we went by bus to Malia. Maybe my review will help you with something, look ... I can look at the prices a little later in the remaining booklets.

I agree that you can see all the sights on your own. If you could specify how you are going to get around (bus or car rental) and what interests you (beaches, monasteries, archaeological sites, gorges, etc.), you would also be advised something more specific;)
аватар Gatto
If you want to visit the sights on your own and there are no "contraindications" to driving, it is highly recommended to take a car. In Crete, this procedure is very simple. You can, of course, travel by bus, but it is not so convenient. From Hersonissos, the Palace of Knossos is relatively close, but herds of tourists, as a rule, roam there. It is better to go to Phaistos - these are the same ruins, only there are an order of magnitude fewer people. Indeed, he is farther away. I would also highly recommend the Homo Sapiens Museum, it is also located somewhere in the area, however, in the mountains. But the museum is very busy. You can visit the cave of Zeus if climbing the mountains is not tiring. True, you can climb there on a donkey. Such a pleasure costs 15 Jews, if only to rise, and if it is necessary both there and back, then 20 Jews for everything about everything. Unfortunately, you did not indicate in what radius you are going to visit the sights, otherwise I would have named a lot more. However, you can find what you need for yourself in these reports: http://blogs.turpravda.com/Gatto/46920.html (2010) and http://blogs.turpravda.com/Gatto/ 58543.html (2011).
Have a nice holiday!

As for the Palace of Knossos - this is a must visit place. This is a legend. You can't replace any Festos.

thanks to everyone for the help) we have also looked at a hotel in AGIA PELAGIA, what can you say about this settlement?
аватар frolova.k
We have no rights, so we will travel by bus. Is the bus station located in each locality or near the hotel?
аватар Gatto
There is a bus station in every major settlement such as Chania, Rethymnon, Heraklion and Sitia. But, as a rule, long-distance buses stop there (say, Heraklion - Rethymnon). And there are, let's say, commuter buses running between two settlements not very distant from each other along a set route with many stops. And I also wanted to add: on the one hand, it's good that you are going to visit everything on your own, but you should not discount the excursions. For example, you can easily go to Knossos or Phaistos on your own, but to the island of Santorini - this is unlikely to be convenient (and it's worth a visit!). Also, if you're into sports and want to visit the Samaria Gorge (described in detail in my 2010 report), it's best to take a guided tour as well.
аватар frolova.k
About AGIA PELAGIA they write that this is a small fishing village 26 km from Heraklion. I think there should be passing buses to Heraklion.
аватар Kaici
You are absolutely right. A national highway runs along the entire northern coastline, along which intercity buses run very often. You can find the schedules here:
http://www.bus-service-crete-ktel.com/timetable.php
Don't look for the bus station. Near all the settlements on the highway there is a stop. Just go to the stop in the right direction and when you see the bus, raise your hand, because buses stop only on demand. Almost all buses look the same - big green Mercedes, the route is lit up above the windshield. They go quite often, it seems to me somewhere every half an hour. Of course, the closest thing to you will be getting to Heraklion, I think it will cost up to 2 euros. In Heraklion you can see the fortress, the archaeological museum and just walk around the city and the embankment. If you want to go to Santorini, you can consider taking the ferry from Heraklion. Very close to Heraklion is Knossos. True, I won’t tell you exactly how to get to them on my own, probably it will be most convenient by taxi, the distance from the highway there is small. Also not far from Heraklion are the Aquapark and the Cretan Aquarium.
аватар Kaici
The aquarium, in principle, is not far from the highway, a little further than Heraklion, there are sooo many signs for it. It’s more difficult with the water park, it’s also not far away, but I don’t know how to get to it on the mountain and how to get to it on my own. Also in Heraklion you can take a bus to Matala. You can go even further beyond Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos - a very beautiful town. This is what concerns the east of you, now we are looking to the west))) Just a few km. along the national highway and a little inland is the village of Fodele. This typical Cretan village is famous for being the birthplace of the painter El Greco. It seems like there is his house-museum there (I myself haven’t been there, but I’ve heard a lot. Further along the highway, it’s worth visiting the city of Rethymnon (it’s about 50 km from Agia Pelagia). A very beautiful city, with narrow streets, a fishing port. Although the main embankment is not for me I like it very much - there are a lot of tourists, food is expensive. If you come in for a bite to eat - go to the fishing port, you will find it by the lighthouse, which is located on the breakwater at the entrance to the port.Another 20 km. behind Rethymno along the national highway there is a small town of Georgioupoli. It is famous for its little church, which is built on the sea and can be reached by a stone path.
аватар Kaici
Also in it the river flows into the sea, turtles are found in the river. But I would advise you to go a couple of km. formerly Georgiopoli in the village of Kavros. In principle, it is unremarkable except for a very good sandy beach. I think you will notice him from the bus window at the entrance to Kavros. But at 4 km. in the interior of the island (taxi, bike rental in Kavros, sightseeing train from Kavros, walking too) is the freshwater lake Kourna. The lake is deep-water, located at the foot of the mountains, with very clear blue water. It is worth renting a catamaran there to swim to the depth (7-8 euros). And from there you can stop by Georgiopoli in Principe. From Kavros from Georgiopoli on foot go about 30 minutes. Even west of Georgiopoli along the national highway is the city of Chania (another 40 km.) Also a very beautiful city with narrow streets, a Venetian embankment, a lighthouse, a market. Personally, I like this city the most in Crete. All distances and routes were written based on the starting point of Agia Peligia. Hersonissos to the east, but also along the national highway. Agia Pelagia to the west from Heraklion, Chersonissos to the east.

To be honest, I have not been to Hersonissos, nor to Agia Pelagia. But Hersonissos has a reputation for being the most expensive resort on Crete. There are a lot of 5* hotels, night clubs, restaurants, etc. Agia Pelagia, if I'm not mistaken, is a calm resort town. See for yourself what you like best.
аватар lanos
The most expensive place in Crete is Elounda Bay. Beckham and his wife, Pugacheva, etc. rested there. Hersonissos is a place with average prices, I hear about the reputation of the most expensive resort for the first time. I rested in a 4-star hotel, everything turned out cheaper than in Turkey.
аватар Kaici
You are right, I beg your pardon. Eludna somehow flew out of my head :)
аватар Gatto
No, Kaici, Hersonissos, on the contrary, is one of the cheapest cities, but at the same time it is the most party-like. There, perhaps, the most entertainment in all of Crete.
аватар frolova.k
Where can I get detailed maps with routes. and maybe with the indicated sights .. are there such things at all?))
аватар Kaici
You can get a map of Crete for free at any car rental office. Attractions are marked. As a rule, there are maps of large cities with distances in them. Guidebooks in Russian can be found in stores (from 20 euros somewhere)
аватар Kaici
Yes, I heard about the party-going nature of Herssonisos. Just from personal experience, the more touristy the place, the more expensive everything is. I mean food, souvenirs, etc.

Crete is a very large island. You won’t get around very well by car, but by bus ... we couldn’t do it in 10 days.
Both Hersonissos and Agia Pelagia are on the coastal road. But Agia Pelagia is a little away from her. How much? I can not answer. Maybe you can walk, or maybe you have to drive. Our goal was attractions, so we booked a hotel in the Heraklion suburb of Amoudara. This is the only way to travel west, east, and south. The bus from the hotel to the bus stations was urban, not intercity. Intercity buses arrive at different stations (in directions). See www.ktelherlas.gr (the address was written off from the timetable, one for different stations). Some intercity buses run frequently (in the direction of Agios Nikolaos - every half an hour) and until late. Some - once a day. So before choosing a hotel (and its location), decide what you want to see in Crete. Some places can't be reached by bus at all.
I agree that you need to go to Santorini, buy a ticket at a travel agency (we bought it near our hotel), then you will also have a transfer from the hotel. And when you decide on the date of Santorini, choose other places.

We have been to Knossos and Phaistos. Knossos is more spectacular, because reconstructed, Phaistos is mothballed and only lovers of archeology can understand what is what. You can get to Knossos from the square. Elefterias by city bus (suburb in the south of the city), to Phaistos from the bus station B in the west of Herakleion (direction - south). Last year, on the first Sunday of Knossos, it was free, on Tuesday - Fest (maybe something has changed this year).
I was interested in Gortyn (also south), I bought a tour. Samaria is for athletes, because you need to walk 15 km through the national park, first descending from the mountains, then in the sun (you won’t be able to leave the distance - the entrance is in the north, the exit in the south is not for everyone). It was very hard for me, and May is already hot. It's a long drive from all places except Chania. But beauty...
Maps are taken at tourist offices (in Herakleon - near the same Svoboda Square), on the contrary - the Archaeological Museum (it is unlikely that it is fully open this year - only one hall, it is better to combine with Knossos on the same day). There is nothing to do in Heraklion for more than one day either.

If you do not have a license, then choose Hersonissos or Stalis if you are going to the East to rest. In Agia Pelagia, transport is more difficult.
аватар tatianacrete
If you are interested in good beaches, then you can see the village of Kokkini Hani - and not far from the airport, and the bus runs, in general, it is convenient. But no nightlife :)
аватар tatianacrete
Have you already chosen a hotel?
аватар frolova.k
And what is more difficult with transport? like this is one route from Rethymnon to Heraklion ...
We chose the hotel BLUE BAY RESORT & SPA 4 * (Agia Pelagia)
аватар tatianacrete
Agia Pelagia is located about 4-5 km from the highway, quite a steep descent. It's a long walk from the hotel to the highway.
аватар tatianacrete
Public Bus stop next to the hotel - indicated in the description of the hotel on their website.

someone managed to give me 100 negative ratings overnight (or 50 if they were authorized). I don't think it makes sense. This has already happened, and contacting the administration corrected the situation. Let's see what happens this time. I am serious about writing reviews and the accuracy of the published information, and do not miss the nonsense that many people write here. Not everyone likes it, obviously.
аватар lanos
Someone throws it in the heat then in the cold. In a couple of hours I managed to add 100 points to me. I wonder how he (she) does it, it seems like there is a daily limit.

Is it possible to get to the Cave of Zeus on my own (by bus) from Agia Pelagia? Where is it located at all, please?
