City selection
Hello. We're going to about. Crete. During the rest, we plan to see as many sights as possible, with the opportunity to get to the mainland itself. Tell me, in which city is it better to stay?

Good afternoon! We rested in Rethymnon, rented a car and traveled around the entire island (with the exception of the east coast - Agios Nikolas). In general, if you plan to take a car (which I highly recommend), then you will not have any difficulties with movement - the island is quite small, it is not difficult to get to the sights.
As for traveling to the mainland, I will not recommend anything to you. It's expensive and time consuming (in my opinion). It might be better to organize a separate trip.
Have a nice rest!

I support. I also rested in Rethymnon, but we traveled the whole island. Were already on the beach Vai. Rethymno is very well located, equidistant from all attractions, has a wide sandy beach and is not as urbanized as other major cities of the island.

Rested in the city of Hersonissos (40 km from Heraklion). If I didn’t go out to the clubs every night, I would probably also look around the whole island. But, in general, I traveled anyway, even taking into account the fact that I had to use excursions and public transport, because. I don't have a driver's license
About a trip to the mainland. I looked at this option when I was going on a trip this year: I was going to go from Crete for a couple of days to continental Greece. You can find flights for 100-150 euros in both directions. Ferries in this case are not the best option: you will move very slowly

Thanks for the help. In which ateliers did you live, what to choose for quality and price, since there are a lot of offers from the tour operator.

We lived in Jo-An Beach, they position themselves as 4, but I would give them a confident 3. We lived in a 2-floor bungalow, the food is excellent. We spent very little time at the hotel. constantly traveled / were on the beach. Budget option. but well worth it. The hotel chain has a website. photo and description are true.

We lived in three hotels. Atlantis Beach 4*, Pearl Beach 4* and Demitras Village. Everyone is on the beach, they are actually nearby. Atlantis is more pretentious, Dimitras is the most democratic, but there is no road, a huge parking lot and apartments with a kitchen. Well, "all inclusive too", but I don't like the "buffet" :-( Meals are the same in all countries.

Take a hotel somewhere between Rethymno and Heraklion: from there it will be easier to get to anywhere in Crete to visit this or that attraction.
Do not get carried away with the star rating of hotels. As you know, cool hotels in Crete are designed only for dudes and / or suckers. Choose some modest 3 * hotel, just read the reviews: the most important thing is that it is quiet and you can sleep. Everything else is not so important: after all, most of the time in Crete is usually spent not in hotels, but on trips, excursions, travels (preferably in a rented car). Have a nice holiday!

I have been living in Crete for more than a year and I would advise you Hersonissos, firstly, this town is more designed for Russians and mostly Russian tourists here, and secondly, there are many attractions nearby, good hotels! But the choice is yours, enjoy your holiday!

For lovers of partying, Hersonissos is really the most suitable place. It can be called "local Las Vegas".
I wouldn’t say, however, that it is designed mainly for Russians and most tourists there are Russians, but if that were the case, then for me personally it would be a definite minus, not a plus.

Has anyone lived in Vella Casito in Rethymno? It seems that I didn’t find any bad reviews, we, in principle, for an overnight stay, since we don’t plan to stay in the room

I lived, only it is pronounced as Bella Casita (Bella Casita), i.e. beautiful house, translated from Italian. Then it, however, was also called Motakis Village. I should also note that it is not located in Rethymnon itself, but 6-7 km from it towards Heraklion.
Modest hotel, but quite good, quiet. Freshly squeezed orange juice is served for breakfast, and the breakfast itself is quite good. More details can be found here: http://blogs.turpravda.lv/Gatto/46920.html
