in general, we rented a car and traveled the entire island in 3 days. moreover, they took the car from their own operator, it turned out to be easier in terms of insurance, etc. made a route on the map and forward. For most excursions, a guide is not needed, it is quite possible to see everything yourself without any time limits.

We bought an excursion to Santorini from our tour operator, and the rest of the excursions in Crete at a local agency, where prices are several times lower, and the quality of services is the same))) There is an excellent agency in the area of the Cactus (Stalida) hotel, if you live near it. It is absolutely safe and not scary to buy excursions there :) Then they regretted that they overpaid so much money for Santorini, and did not take the ex. directly from a local company. Perhaps it is better to decide what you are going to take away, read about the place and go there already prepared. Or rent a car, as you are advised, and not mess with the "guides".
