in both cities was passing through (for review, so to speak). So, I liked Heraklion more. But, I will say that if you are going to rent a car, then there is not much difference. For me + Heraklion is that there is a port from where you can safely leave for Santorini (although Hersonissos is not far, but, again, you need to think about how to get to the port). If you are going to travel by bus, then, again, in my opinion, it is better to do this from Heraklion. And if the main goal is just to relax on the beach, then Hersonissos.

Go to rest in Hersonissos, and from there you can take a regular bus to Heraklion. It is very cheap and the buses run every 10-15 minutes. Drive 25 minutes.

Hersonissos is a party-resort, mostly tourists light it up. Heraklion is quieter, in nightclubs, cafes are mostly local. Chania is the most interesting city in Crete, but it is a bit far to go to it. It all depends on what kind of vacation you want.

I would say that Chania is an older and smaller copy of Heraklion. Both cities are located perpendicular to the sea and have only Venetian ports facing the sea and a narrow strip of coastal strip. Both cities have very narrow streets. Heraklion is gassed, Chania is very densely built up. The streets are so narrow that you can touch opposite sides with both hands (I have such a photo :-))
Compared to them, the free, spreading on the coastline 3 km Rethymnon, is in a much more advantageous position. The promenade along the sea is the longest in Crete, the Old Town, the Venetian Port and the Old Fortress put Rethymno above all competition. Yes, and it’s convenient to go there, and it’s close to the same Qurna. And there is a ferry to Santorini from there.
I have been to all the cities in Crete, only in Rethymno I would settle again :-)
